BEIRUT — An Israeli interceptor missile exploded over the town of Khiam in southern Lebanon on Monday, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported, as tensions persist along the border amid ongoing US-led negotiations aimed at addressing security arrangements and ending the Israeli occupation of the country.

The NNA said the explosion occurred over Khiam in the Marjayoun district, without providing further details.

At around the same time, the Israeli army said it had launched an interceptor toward a “suspicious aerial target” detected in an area where its forces were operating in southern Lebanon.

The army said details of the incident were under investigation, adding that no warning sirens were activated in accordance with its alert policy.

The incident comes amid continued tensions and Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon and Israel have been engaged in US-led negotiations since March aimed at addressing security arrangements along the border and ending Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory.

Meanwhile, two Palestinians were killed and three others critically injured in an Israeli strike on Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday amid continued violations of the ceasefire in effect since last year, medical sources said.

Two casualties were reported when an Israeli drone hit a group of Palestinians northwest of Rafah, the sources said.

The drone fired at least one missile at the group near Muawiya Mosque in the Al-Mawasi area northwest of the city, according to witnesses.

Separately, Israeli artillery fired shells toward areas northeast of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, local sources said.

Israeli naval forces also opened fire and launched shells toward the Gaza City coast in the north, with no injuries reported, the sources said.
