Shahsin Shafeek PV, Product Manager at VAD Technologies. Data sovereignty, privacy and secure collaboration have become strategic priorities for governments and regulated organisations across the Middle East. In this interview, Joe Dutka, Sales Engineer at Nextcloud; Aaron Martin, Sales Team Lead at Nextcloud; and Shahsin Shafeek PV, Product Manager at VAD Technologies, discuss Nextcloud’s open-source and modular architecture, its ability to operate on-premise and within air-gapped environments, and rising demand across the GCC. In light of ongoing environmental changes and the challenges arising from rapid industrial expansion, scientific attention is increasingly directed toward modern approaches that integrate microbiology with advanced nanotechnology. This integration aims to combat pollution and accelerate the remediation of soil and water through innovative, more efficient, and sustainable methods. Moving beyond temporary solutions that address only the surface of environmental problems, contemporary research now focuses on the microscopic network of biological and molecular interactions. At the heart of this network, microorganisms play a decisive role in maintaining environmental balance. Although invisible to the naked eye, they exert a profound influence…
The fashion forecast and the actual forecast have, for once, aligned. This season’s defining look is British country heritage — waxed jackets, tartan linings, the whole Barbour-and-Labrador fantasy — and the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology reckons a strong El Niño is about to hand us our wettest winter in years, the rains arriving early. For once, a Dubai fashion editor can recommend a waxed jacket with a straight face. Barbour, that most improbable of Gulf retail propositions, opened its first Middle East stores here last year (Dubai Hills and Mirdif City Centre). For the uninitiated, it’s the 130-year-old British…

TEL AVIV — Israeli opposition leader Avigdor Liberman said on Friday that his country’s global standing had reached an “unprecedented low,” warning of a “real economic collapse” because of European sanctions and their impact on trade. “Israel’s standing in the world has reached an unprecedented low,” the Anadolu news agency quoted Liberman as saying. “For years, Israel benefited from the American veto at the UN Security Council. I believe that as long as (US President Donald) Trump remains president, the veto will continue to be available to us. Under the next president, whether Republican or Democrat, the reality could change,”…

Rapid adoption of AI, cloud platforms and other emerging technologies is helping organisations innovate, but inadequate planning and security controls can create serious protection gaps. Effective cybersecurity requires more than deploying new tools. Leadership must embed security across business operations while enabling teams to work efficiently. Moses Frost, Senior Instructor at SANS Institute, discusses the importance of executive-led security culture, simplifying cybersecurity for business leaders and prioritising vulnerabilities according to their exploitability. He also explains how organisations can combine AI and cloud technologies to develop resilient security policies without restricting innovation. Why do organisations continue to repeat familiar cybersecurity mistakes,…
Dubai has never been shy about making a grand entrance. In a city where architecture reaches for the clouds and dinner can come with fire, fog, music and an aesthetic straight out of Instagram, extravagance has long been part of the experience. But as quiet luxury — the fashion and lifestyle shorthand for craftsmanship and restraint over logos and overt display of status — made its way into the mainstream in 2023, it began to shape how consumers evaluate luxury beyond their wardrobes. Fuelled by the held-back wealth codes of Succession, TikTok’s “old money” aesthetic and a renewed appetite for…
NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia has underscored the importance of collective international action to strengthen global water security and translate international commitments on water into tangible results that support public health, food security, economic development, climate resilience and stability. The Kingdom stressed the need to align financing with credible water priorities, accelerate high-impact innovation, expand access to reliable data and build the institutional capacity required for implementation, enabling countries to better address water challenges and achieve shared goals. The call came during a high-level ministerial session titled “United for Water: A Call for Collective Action,” co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and…
PARIS — Pope Leo XIV on Friday urged leaders not to remain indifferent to suffering in the Middle East, calling for dialogue and diplomacy to end the war in Iran and Lebanon. The pope made the remarks on Friday as he arrived for a four-day visit to France. He was welcomed at Paris-Orly Airport by French President Emmanuel Macron. “We cannot remain indifferent to such suffering that wounds human dignity and cries out to God for justice,” Leo XIV said, referring to the situation in the Middle East. “The gravity” of what is happening in the region should “call each…
